Frequently
Asked Questions:
Q:
What kind of gemstone is Sea Blue Chalcedony?
A: Sea Blue Chalcedony is a new gem cabochon
that combines the vibrant tropical color of the Caribbean Sea with the
popular translucence of blue chalcedony. A microcrystalline variety of
quartz, chalcedony has been recently elevated to prominence by leading
jewelry designers such as David Yurman and Henry Dunay.
Q: The color is so lovely. Is it natural?
A: Sea Blue Chalcedony
is a natural chalcedony enhanced with a dyeing process to enrich its color.
Because of its porous nature, chalcedony is often dyed various colors,
many of which are widely accepted in the jewelry trade today. This is
the first time a natural looking aquamarine or Peruvian blue opal color
has been successfully achieved. Sea Blue Chalcedony
is available in these shades--a rich pastel Aqua,
a saturated Caribbean blue.
Q: What is the origin?
A: The material that we use can be from various
locales. The special quality of rough for our unique process is more important
than the origin. A unique advantage of Maxam Magnata being the exclusive
source for Sea Blue Chalcedony
is that our company can ensure its quality for your jewelry market.
Q:
Is the process permanent?
A: Yes. Unlike many other gemstone-dyeing processes,
ours is permanent and will not lose its color over time or fade from sunlight
exposure.
Q:
Is Sea Blue Chalcedony
suitable for rings?
A: Absolutely. This gem is durable (at 7 on the
Mohs scale). It is perfect for all earrings, pendants, slides, and brooches,
and sets up great in rings, bracelets, and cufflinks as well.
Q:
What about cleaning and bench repairs?
A: Sea Blue Chalcedony
can be steam or ultrasonic-cleaned, and is resistant to pickling solutions
or acetone. Do not directly apply a jeweler's torch to the gemstones.
Repolishing is fine for scratches or nicks; we recommend against recutting,
since color saturation could become lighter.
